Low‐intensity kangaroo grazing has largely benign effects on soil health

چکیده

Kangaroos (Macropus spp., Osphranter spp.) are the most ubiquitous free-ranging herbivores in Australia. Much has been written on their impacts plant community composition and how they interact with livestock, particularly extensive rangelands. Little is known, however, about kangaroos affect soil function relationship healthy soils, nor impact of peri-urban populations where might come into conflict humans. To address this, we used exclosures to examine low densities morphology surface a environment outskirts Sydney, We found that kangaroo grazing was associated reduced herbaceous biomass cover, biocrust surfaces were generally more stable, had greater cover incorporation litter species richness compared inside exclosures. There no differences indices nutrient cycling stability. Overall, our study supports notion grazing, at current experienced this reserve, significant deleterious effect health, as measured by surface. conclude levels (˜70 km−2) unlikely have major long-term negative effects condition.

Fire and grazing effects on wind erosion, soil water content, and soil temperature.

Selective grazing of burned patches can be intense if animal distribution is not controlled and may compound the independent effects of fire and grazing on soil characteristics. Our objectives were to quantify the effects of patch burning and grazing on wind erosion, soil water content, and soil temperature in sand sagebrush (Artemisia filifolia Torr.) mixed prairie. We selected 24, 4-ha plots ...

FORAGES AND PASTURES SYMPOSIUM: Improving soil health and productivity on grasslands using managed grazing of livestock.

Beyond grazing, managed grasslands provide ecological services that may offer economic incentives for multifunctional use. Increasing biodiversity of plant communities may maximize net primary production by optimizing utilization of available light, water, and nutrient resources; enhance production stability in response to climatic stress; reduce invasion of exotic species; increase soil OM; re...

An Assessment of Grazing Effects on Soil Carbon Stocks in Grasslands

Grazing ; modifies the structure and function of ecosystems, affecting soil organic carbon (SOC) storage. Although grazing effects on some ecosystem < attributes have been thoroughly reviewed, current literature on grazing effects on SOC needs to be synthesized. Our objective was to synthesize the effects of grazing on SOC stocks in grasslands, establishing the major mechanistic pathways involv...

Short-term grazing exclusion has no impact on soil properties and nutrients of degraded alpine grassland in Tibet, China

Since the 1980s, alpine grasslands have been seriously degraded on the Tibetan Plateau. Grazing exclusion by fencing has been widely adopted to restore degraded grasslands. To clarify the effect of grazing exclusion on soil quality, we investigated soil properties and nutrients by comparing free-grazing (FG) and grazing exclusion (GE) grasslands in Tibet. Soil properties – including soil bulk d...
